Norton Security Suite not opening or responding?

Norton isn't opening when i try to access it. When i tried to uninstall and reinstall, a norton message pops up and it says "initializing" and just does that for hours without any results. i need to have a working anti virus before i get anything harmful. Or do I already have a virus? Someone please help me! if this matters, i have windows 7
