What is a free antivirus software that won't download a virus to my computer?

I need an antivirus software that is free to download and will allow me to protect my computer from viruses that doesn't download a virus itself.

8. I would recommend AVAST or Avira - both free and have good level of protection. Next would be Microsoft Security Essentials or free PCTools antivirus ( http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/download/ ). I would not recommend AVG, though some like it. AVG tarnished its name in antivirus tests recently : they send faked screenshot while disagreeing with results.
9. CNET has a great "Security Starter Kit" which as a lot of free software that will help you protect your computer. Check it out here: http://download.cnet.com/2701-2023_4-6-1.html They are a safe and trusted site with great editorial coverage of tech stuff.
10. MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS. It has a higher detection rate than Avast and Avg. So there. that's your answer. Give me 10 points now.
