norton security?
On behalf of a neighbor whos just bought a new Comp. She was given a 3 month sub. to Norton. At the same time as purchase she bought the complete Norton Security Suite. Should she delete the freebie before she installs the new one, and is this going to prove a problem or can she do it through add/remove. Thanx to you all I know many of you are going to say bin it but she`s insistent its gonna be used

- I have just done the exact same thing, although my free subscription ran out before I installed the new suite. And yes, I was told you ABSOLUTELY have to remove every trace of the old security before installing the new
- She'll gain a 3 month extension by using the trial one first.
- I would suggest her to remove it from the add/remove option in the control panel, then install the bought version.
- Yes. Have her delete the free one and run the SAV Cleanup utility to remove the registry entries and other leftovers before performing a fresh install. Check at Symantec's website before uninstall.
- use the 3 months, then install the suite
- Is the Norton Security Suite that came with the computer the same version as the one she bought? If they are, then she doesn't have to uninstall the old NSS. When her 3 month trial is up, she can use the key that comes with the purchased NSS to re-activate the NSS that's on her computer. The best way to find out if this works or not is to e-mail Symantec's technical support staff.
- If she's going to use Norton then she's beyond helping.
- I just installed the new one over the top of the old and I have had no problems. The worst that can happen is that you have to remove the thing and start again. But if she wants to be extra careful then I would wait for the 3 months to end then remove it following the instructions then install the new. edit: My situation might be different, I had a 1 year subscription free with my computer a couple of years ago.
- You can't remove Norton form the Add & Remove panel, you have to get a special tool from the Symantec website! I'm afraid I don't have the link but you could ask for it. I always prefer to do a clean install rather than add a new version over the old, it cuts out a lot of problems.
- Hi I just went through this.Use the 3 months trial first. Then download and use the Norton removal tool from the Symantics site.Or just load the year subscription on top of the trial after it has run out.I have done it both ways and both work
- you will need to remove any norton on the pc before installing another in add/remove unistall there after that click run than browse your drive (c usually)open that and in program files delete anything norton/symantec as well you will need to reboot (sometimes twice) before you can install the other norton on your pc norton does have a removal tool on there site which may also help
- Dump Norton and use AVG Free http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ The Norton uninstall tool uninstalls ALL Norton 2004/2005/2006/2007 products from your computer. It also uninstalls Norton Ghost 10.0/9.0/2003. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html
- To remove norton completly go to norton website and download norton removal tool,This will remove 3 months sub then restart computer and load norton security then register,You cannot remove it by using add/remove programme.
- NORTON Security??? load of RUBBISH!!! I'm saying that politely, I could call it a lot worse - but as this is hopefully a family site, I'll just say that!!! Try some of the free ones off the net!Experiment till you fined the right one. I find McAfee - Windows Defender, Spybot, AVG all quite easy to use! Norton caused me too much hassle! Don't have anything good to say about it!!! Soz!
