How do I remove Symantec AV from Vista Home Premium?

I want to get rid of SAV on my laptop but am having trouble doing so. I've tried to uninstall via Control Panel/Remove Programs. It gets stuck at "Gathering required information". I found manual uninstallation instructions on Symantec's website but am unable to follow them because they require that I kill current AV processes. I am unable to do so. Task manager complains about insufficient rights. I don't know how to get around that. I just want to remove it altogether.

1. Without stopping the process you cannot remove it. the "add/remove programs" icon will need the same rights. you can check if you are an administrator by going into the control panel and then into users? (i think that is it, I removed vista about a month ago.) Then check if it lists you as an admin. If you are not an admin, the only way to remove it is to totally reinstall the OS (yeah it sucks I know). Syamantec is a security/anti-Virus program and it likes to hang on hard if you don't have the rights.
